Germination of an idea
A seed of change is the site of potential and the impetus for growth. It is the opportunity for us never to forget that we must plant that which we need and nurture it into blossom. Seeds require tending, gentle support and nutrition. They are also unbelievably tough, able to survive frozen winters, bombarded by ice, winds and rains in their tiny shelter. In a globalized world where corporations fight for control of the earth, sowing seeds, nurturing them and harvesting the fruits of the seeds can become a metaphorical inspiration as well as revolutionary and political act. By reclaiming our food systems, we nurture our communities and reconnect with the earth and one another. The Sanskrit word for seed is 'Bija'; which translates to the root of all existence and the container of possibility, life and optimism. This site reflects the seeds of my own learning and shares knowledge that I have exposed to the light, nurtured and will continue to tend towards fruition and beyond. This site is about my own growth, as I strengthen and reach toward all that is possible. It is about the great hope that I hold for the world, and the deep passion and belief that I have in communities and connection. Welcome! Site introduction and organization Seeds of change is organized around narrative introductory text and case-studies presented as photo essays. The narrative is based on reflections from my Master's of Social Work (M.S.W.) program at the University of Calgary, and my internship placements during 2009 and 2010. The narrative links the practice of social work with personal experience. The primary role of the case-study feature of this site is to provide a visual reference for specific actions, lessons, and relationships that occurred over the past 10 years or so of my life. While primary a photo presentation, I have included detailed descriptions with each image (click to access) of how the events in each image is linked to my life, work and education. I hope that you enjoy reading! Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead |
